Synopsis[]

Main article: List of Rosie episodes

Always dressed in black, Rosie casts a sardonic and offbeat eye on the world around her. And sheā€™s never at a loss for words. Her world is confined to her house and its surroundings, where she regularly meets her neighbor, Olive, who she takes a malignant pleasure in driving up the wall. Whenever she feels the need, Rosie brings in her imaginary friend Blackie, an easy-going green sheep. A good friend, he is the only person she confides in because Blackie has the advantage of never being able to tell anyone else her secrets.[4]

Rosie Bodelin[]

Rosie Bodelin (voiced by Jodie Forrest in the pilot; AnaĆÆs Demoustier in the French dub) is the titular character of the series. Rosie is a lazy, deadpan, antisocial, and sarcastic young girl with a cynical view of the world around her who would rather do nothing all day. Because of this, she is usually seen inside the comfort of her home either sitting in front of the TV or talking to her imaginary friend, Blackie, instead of going out to make any real friends. However, she would often get bored and would have no choice but to see her neighbor, Olive, to bother him a little.

Olive Chatou[]

Olive Chatou (voiced by Sharon Mann in the pilot; Bernadette Ferry for Season 1 in the French dub; Nathalie BienaimƩ for Season 2) is Rosie's next-door neighbor. He is a cheerful young boy who wants to be friends with Rosie, but he's frequently a victim of Rosie's many wildest ideas. Olive follows her everywhere and tends to idolize her, despite being taken advantage of by her.

Blackie[]

Blackie (sound effects provided by Romain Gadiou) is Rosie's imaginary friend. Despite his name, Blackie is a green sheep who doesn't speak.

Delphine Bodelin[]

Delphine Bodelin (voiced by Milane Kang in the Pilot; Bernadette Ferry for Season 1 in the French dub; FrƩdƩrique Marlot for Season 2) is Rosie's doting mother. She would often try to get her daughter to see other people and make friends instead of seeing her watching TV all day inside her house. Delphine is usually seen either by her shadow or her voice in Season 1, but starting in Season 2 she makes her physical appearance.

Production[]

Rosie is based on comic strips created by Romain Gadiou that were published on a French website called "Mundo Bd". The strips originally ran from February 5, 2008, to October 29, 2008.[5][6]

In the spring of 2009, Gadiou pitched an idea for a TV series adaptation based on his comic strips to 2 Minutes. 2 Minutes became interested in the idea, and a pilot was developed during the summer of 2009. During the development of the pilot, Zagtoon became co-producer for it. Zagtoon was a newcomer in the French animation market at the time and it provided financial backup for 2 Minutes.[7]

In October 2009, the Rosie pilot was shown at MIPCOM. During the event, Gulli purchased the broadcasting rights for it. The first season of Rosie was eventually greenlighted and the production crew at 2 Minutes started developing it for its television premiere in 2011.[7]

On February 25, 2010, it was announced that Zagtoon would be involved with the co-production of Rosie after signing a deal with Gulli and Cabler AB. According to the co-founder of ZAG, Jacqueline Tordjman, Zagtoon continued to provide financial backup for 2 Minutes to produce the TV series.[8]

The production of its first season lasted between April and September 2010. The production crew, including the director, storyboarders, and animators, were all located in the 2 Minutes studio in Angouleme for more efficiency.[7]

International release[]

Rosie first premiered in France on February 19, 2011, on Gulli.[9] The entire first season is available in French on both the official Rosie YouTube channel and the 2 Minutes YouTube channel, as of April 2021.[10][11]

Related media[]

Rosie has its own chapter book series published by Nathan. The book series is only available in France and it adapted a selected number of episodes from the second season of the TV series. It ran from August 22, 2013, to June 26, 2014.[12][13]

The official Gulli website used to have three online games featuring characters from Rosie. The games included Jumpin Rosie, Rosie Tells It, and Rosie: Ultimate Pie Fight.

Trivia[]

  • Rosie is the first television series to be released under the ZAG Toon brand. It is also the first television series to be successfully released by Zagtoon.
  • Despite Rosie being a co-production between Zagtoon and 2 Minutes, ZAG doesn't own the full rights to the series. Instead, it is 2 Minutes since creator Romain Gadiou pitched the series to the studio.
    • ZAG, however, did provide financial backup for 2 Minutes to produce the TV series.
  • As of 2023, it's unknown if the TV series was ever released in English. The only known media that is available in English is the pilot that was produced in 2009 and released on the official Zagtoon YouTube channel in 2012. However, because Rosie aired a decade ago and it isn't considered well-known, there is currently little to no evidence that could confirm if the series was ever dubbed in English.
  • Rosie is the first television series co-produced by Zagtoon to reach past 100 episodes. However, it makes sense because Season 1 has only a one-minute length for each episode.
  • Rosie is the only television series to have an instrumental opening sequence.
  • On September 16, 2012, the official Zagtoon YouTube channel uploaded the English dubbed version of the pilot under the title "Rosie Ep 01".[14]
