Development[]
The series was first announced on Jeremy Zag's Instagram on February 20, 2015. The television series was planned to have thirty-nine half-hour episodes and it's about "the impossible love between a fairy who fight witches, and a young sorcerer" in New York City.[7] A live-action feature film is later announced on March 11, 2015.[8]
Pixie Girl was featured at MIPCOM 2015. However, the project wasn't able to find broadcasters who would be interested in purchasing the rights for it. As a result, the television series didn't get greenlighted into production.[9]
In 2016, the series premise was reworked to focus on Pixie Girl's partnership with a human boy.[10] As part of the change, the titular superheroine was given a redesign by Angie Nasca.[11] The number of episodes was also increased to seventy-eight, but they were planned to be eleven-minute long.[12]
On July 23, 2016, a demo of the theme song for the television series was played during a teaser from the ZAG Heroez promotional video at a Miraculous Ladybug panel at San Diego Comic-Con.[13]
In September 2016, the official ZAG website was updated to include Pixie Girl as one of the company's featured brands. The website also had a release date timeline, which revealed that the project would also have a web series. The web series was slated for release in 2017, while the television series would consist of two seasons; the first season was slated for 2018, and the second for 2019.[14] A character model for Pixie Girl was also created, and was rendered for promotional artworks.[15][16][17]
Pixie Girl was later featured at MIPCOM again in 2016 and 2017. However, just like the first time, the project wasn't able to get broadcasters interested in purchasing the rights for it. This prevents the television series from getting greenlighted into production and causes its release to be further delayed.[18][19] In mid-April 2017, the official "release date timeline" from the ZAG website was updated, revealing that the slated release year for Pixie Girl was pushed back to 2019.
From 2018 to 2020, the crew continued to try developing Pixie Girl despite the lack of interest from broadcasters at MIPCOM.[20] As confirmed by character modeling artist Kaan Zorlu, a character named Lady Butterfly was created and was planned to appear in the television series as an ally to Pixie Girl.[6]
Eventually, in 2022, the television series was shelved from production. The project was retooled into an animated musical feature film called Fairy Force, currently developed at ZAG Animation Studios as part of a ten-movie deal with Cross Creek Pictures.[21][22]
Trivia[]
- Because Pixie Girl has been retooled into Fairy Force, it's unknown if plans for the TV series are still happening. If it is, the TV series would likely serve as a spin-off/sequel to the film.
- While it's unconfirmed, a possible reason for Pixie Girl getting delayed multiple times is that the television series was unable to get broadcasters interested in purchasing the rights for it. The series was confirmed to be pitched at MIPCOM three times from 2015 to 2017, but it always led to the project being unable to get greenlighted into production.
- According to an old PDF document that was on the official Method Animation website, the series was planned to have a budget of €9,800,000 ($10,483,207.00 at the time).[1]
- On July 22, 2020, Jeremy Zag revealed that there were plans for a crossover project between Pixie Girl and Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. However, because the concept art was posted before the TV series was shelved and got retooled into Fairy Force, it's unknown if there are still plans for the two franchises to crossover.[23]
- Lady Butterfly was also planned to appear in the Miraculous World TV movie special "Miraculous Rio". However, because the special didn't get greenlighted, Lady Butterfly would make her first animated appearance in Fairy Force.[24][25]
