Kobushi was a planned CGI-animated action comedy feature film based on the 2012 TV series of the same name. It was to be directed by Stephane Juffé.
As of 2021, the film got cancelled from production.[2]
Production[]
The film was first announced on the official ZAG website in 2012 and it is going to be animated in CGI instead of 2D like in the original series.[3]
In 2013, the film was planned to be a live-action adaptation of the television series. However, it was later changed to be fully CG-animated. Concept art for the live-action version was created by Nicolas Weis during development from August to October 2013.[4]
In 2014, it was confirmed on the official ZAG website that the movie's length is going to be 90 minutes long. The website also confirmed that the film was in production.[5]
It was revealed on May 5, 2015, that Tanis Chalopin served as a composer for the film's score and she posted a score piece on SoundCloud.[6]
In 2016, Chalopin posted the first official teaser for the movie on her website, but there wasn't any dialogue from the characters.[7]
On November 16, 2017, Juffé uploaded a teaser for the film on Vimeo.[8]
On June 16, 2021, Juffé confirmed on a now-deleted Instagram post that the feature film had been "aborted", meaning production had been cancelled years prior.[2]
In 2022, Weis further confirmed the film's cancellation on his website by stating, "unfortunately [the film] did not make it to the big screen".[9]
Starting in 2024, the original teaser was made private on Juffé's Vimeo and removed from Chalopin's website. Though, Chalopin's original score is still available on SoundCloud. The teaser is also still available on Weis's website.
Trivia[]
- The film was going to be animated in CGI instead of 2D. This is a reference to how the main series was originally going to be CGI-animated.[10][11]
- As revealed on Stephane Juffé's LinkedIn, he was involved in the film development from January 2011 to September 2013.[12]
- The teaser confirms that the main setting of the Kobushi TV series takes place in Japan.
- The only characters confirmed to be in the film are Toro, Ebi, and Néko. However, it's unknown who voiced them in the original teaser.
- Since Ebi doesn't have his stinkypoo family curse and he is noticeably afraid of Néko unlike in the main series, it's possible that the film serves as an origin story for the TV series.
- Footage from the teaser can be seen in a 2016 ZAG Heroez sizzle reel.[13]
- On June 17, 2022, it was announced that ZAG Animation Studios and Cross Creek Pictures have signed a ten-picture deal.[14] However, it's currently unknown if Kobushi would be part of the deal or if there are plans for ZAG to revisit the project someday.
